A patent is a set of exclusive rights granted by a government to an inventor or assignee for a limited period of time in exchange for detailed public disclosure of an invention. An invention is a solution to a specific technological problem and is a product or a process. Patents are a form of intellectual property.
In India for any invention to be a patent, the invention must be a new product or process and it should involve an inventive step and capable of being made or used in an industry. Patent registrations have a validity of 20 years from the date of filing of patent application. Patent registration are of 2 type – Provisional and complete. A provisional patent lasts for 12 months only; within which a complete patent application must be filed to avoid abandoning the application else the invention becomes non-patentable

Provisional Patent- For increasing chances of obtaining patent registration, a provision specification should be filed along with a patent application when applicant thinks that the invention has reached a stage wherein it can be disclosed on paper but is not complete
